Privacy policy

Last updated: 5 October 2026

This policy explains how Serelo handles personal information when you visit serelo.me, subscribe to our newsletter or contact us.

Serelo is currently a publication about switching off, sleep and recovery. This policy covers our website and editorial communications. We will update it before introducing product sales or materially changing how we use personal information.

Who is responsible for your information?

Serelo is operated by Yannick Barriol trading as Serelo, the controller responsible for the personal information we use for our own purposes.

Email: hello@serelo.me
Postal address: 32 Tenham Avenue, London SW2 4XR, United Kingdom.

Our website and newsletter are provided through Shopify. Shopify also acts as a controller for certain uses of information described below.

What we collect

  • Newsletter details: your email address, any name you choose to provide, subscription status, and records of signup, consent and unsubscribe requests.
  • Messages: your contact details and the information you include when you email us or use our contact form.
  • Website information: your IP address, browser and device information, pages visited, interactions, referral information and cookie identifiers, depending on your settings and consent choices.
  • Email activity: delivery information, bounces, unsubscribe requests, link clicks and, where you agree to open tracking, information indicating that an email was opened. These records may be linked to your subscription.

Information comes directly from you, from your use of our website and emails, and from the providers that operate these services for us. Please do not send medical records or other sensitive personal information through our general contact form. We do not need that information to answer ordinary enquiries.

Why we use it

Purpose Lawful basis
Send the newsletter and updates you signed up for. Your consent, which you can withdraw at any time.
Reply to enquiries and reader feedback. Our legitimate interest in communicating with readers and running the publication.
Operate and secure the website, prevent abuse and investigate technical problems. Our legitimate interest in providing a reliable and secure service.
Use optional website tracking, consent-dependent email tracking and advertising technologies. Your consent.
Manage delivery, subscriptions and service performance using operational records that do not require tracking consent. Our legitimate interest in maintaining a functioning newsletter service.
Keep necessary consent and suppression records, handle rights requests and meet legal requirements. Legal obligations where applicable, and our legitimate interest in documenting and respecting your choices.

When relying on legitimate interests, we consider the effect on your rights and reasonable expectations. We do not treat agreement to receive the newsletter as blanket permission for other uses of your information.

The newsletter and email tracking

You can unsubscribe using the link in any newsletter or by emailing us. This stops marketing emails; we may still reply to a message or privacy request you send us.

We use Shopify to send emails and understand their performance. Email links can record clicks, and a small tracking image can indicate when an email is opened. These measurements help us understand which content readers find useful. Open measurements are approximate: email software and security tools can load or block images independently of whether someone reads an email.

We ask separately for permission to track email opens. You can decline and still receive the newsletter. You can change your open-tracking choice through the controls provided in our emails or contact us for help. Turning off open tracking does not itself turn off link-click reporting. Where a tracking method requires consent, we rely on that consent, rather than your newsletter subscription alone.

Cookies and website choices

Our website uses cookies and similar technologies. Some are necessary to operate and secure it. Optional technologies can help measure website use, personalise experiences or support advertising.

Where consent is required, you can accept or reject optional technologies through the cookie banner and revisit your choices through the website's privacy preferences. You can also manage cookies in your browser, although blocking essential cookies may affect how the website works.

Shopify and other service providers

Shopify hosts our website and provides our newsletter tools. We also use Google Workspace to handle email enquiries. These providers process information needed to supply their services. Information may also be shared with professional advisers or authorities when necessary for legal obligations, protecting rights or dealing with disputes. If the business is transferred, relevant information may be shared with those involved, subject to appropriate safeguards.

Shopify Network Intelligence is enabled. Shopify processes information about interactions with our website together with information from interactions with other merchants and Shopify. This supports enhanced services, including service improvement, personalisation and advertising. Information is shared with Shopify and relevant service providers, which may operate in other countries.

For certain enhanced services, Shopify is responsible for its own processing and for responding to related privacy requests. Read Shopify's Consumer Privacy Policy for details. Visit Shopify's privacy portal to exercise applicable rights, including withdrawing consent or objecting to relevant uses. Website consent choices also control relevant non-essential uses of device information by Shopify Network Intelligence.

Information processed abroad

Our providers may process personal information outside the UK, including in countries with different data protection laws. Where required, transfers are covered by an adequacy decision or appropriate contractual safeguards, such as approved standard contractual clauses with the relevant UK provisions. You can contact us for information about the safeguards applicable to your data.

How long we keep information

We keep personal information for as long as it is needed for the purpose described in this policy, taking account of legal requirements and the need to resolve disputes.

  • Subscriptions: we keep the information needed to send the newsletter while you remain subscribed.
  • Consent and unsubscribe records: after you unsubscribe, we may retain a limited record to demonstrate your choices and prevent future unwanted marketing. This is not permission to keep sending newsletters.
  • Enquiries: we retain correspondence while handling the enquiry and for any further period needed to address related follow-up or a dispute.
  • Technical and engagement records: retention depends on the service's settings and the period needed for security, troubleshooting and assessing performance. We do not retain identifiable records indefinitely merely because they might be useful.

When information is no longer needed, we delete it or anonymise it, subject to applicable provider backup cycles and legal requirements. Contact us if you need information about a particular record.

Your rights

Depending on the circumstances, you can ask to access, correct or delete your personal information, restrict its use, or receive a portable copy. You can object to processing based on legitimate interests. You can always object to use of your information for direct marketing.

Where we rely on consent, you can withdraw it at any time without affecting the lawfulness of processing before withdrawal. Some rights have legal exceptions. We may need proportionate information to verify your identity before responding.

Contact hello@serelo.me to make a request. You can also complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint. You do not need to contact us first. If you live elsewhere, you may have the right to complain to your local data protection authority.

Security, children and other websites

We use appropriate technical and organisational measures to protect personal information, although no online service can guarantee absolute security.

Serelo is intended for an adult audience. We do not knowingly seek personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided information to us, please contact us.

Our articles may link to other websites. Their operators are responsible for their own privacy practices.

Changes to this policy

We will update this page when our practices change and revise the date above. Where required, we will notify you of significant changes or ask for new consent.
